Grammar is half of German. The other half is knowing the right phrase for the right situation. This guide gives you 100+ real-life German phrases organized by setting — so the next time you walk into a German shop, restaurant, or doctor office, you have the words on the tip of your tongue.

All phrases are A2-level, polite (Sie-form by default), and tested in real conversations.

Greetings and Small Talk

Summary

• Memorize phrases by situation, not by topic.
• Always default to Sie in public.
• Use "Ich hätte gern ..." instead of "Ich will" — sounds polite.
• "Bitte" works for both please and you are welcome.
• Listen for "Bar oder Karte?" at every checkout.

Practice Tip: Pick one situation per week (shopping, restaurant, travel ...). Practice the 10–15 phrases for that situation aloud daily. By the end of week 2, those phrases come out automatically — even when nervous.
