Genitiv in German: A Complete B2 Guide to the Possessive Case — Articles, Prepositions & Modern Usage
Master the German Genitiv case at B2 — articles (des, der, des, der), the famous "-s/-es" noun ending, Genitiv prepositions (während, trotz, wegen, anstatt), formal vs spoken usage.

The Genitiv is the fourth and final German case — and the one most often associated with formal, written German. While native speakers often replace it with Dativ in casual speech, it remains essential at B2 for written exams, formal letters, news, and academic German. Without it, your B2 writing sounds incomplete.
This guide covers everything: what Genitiv expresses, all the article and noun changes, the prepositions that require it, how Germans actually use it today, and the most common B2 mistakes.
What Does the Genitiv Express?
The Genitiv shows possession or belonging. It answers the question:
Wessen? — Whose?
Examples:
- Das Auto meines Vaters. — My father's car.
- Die Farbe des Himmels. — The colour of the sky.
- Die Bücher der Studenten. — The students' books.

The Famous "-s" / "-es" Rule for Masculine and Neuter Nouns
In Genitiv, masculine and neuter nouns add an -s or -es ending.
When to add -es (instead of -s)
- Single-syllable nouns: der Mann → des Mannes, das Kind → des Kindes
- Nouns ending in -s, -ß, -x, -z: das Haus → des Hauses, der Schmerz → des Schmerzes
When -s is enough
- Multi-syllable nouns: der Vater → des Vaters, das Auto → des Autos
- Nouns ending in -el, -er, -en: der Lehrer → des Lehrers
No ending
- Feminine nouns NEVER add -s in Genitiv: die Frau → der Frau (not "der Fraus")
- Plurals do not add Genitiv -s either: die Bücher → der Bücher
Personal Names in Genitiv
Names work like English: just add an -s (no apostrophe in standard German).
- Alis Auto — Ali's car
- Saras Buch — Sara's book
- Frau Müllers Brief — Mrs. Müller's letter
If the name ends in -s, -ß, -x, -z: use an apostrophe.
- Hans' Auto — Hans's car
- Max' Schwester — Max's sister

Modern Usage: Genitiv vs Dativ
This is the most important B2 distinction. In spoken German, many Genitiv prepositions are now used with Dativ instead. In written / formal German, stick to Genitiv.
Spoken (often Dativ)
- Wegen dem Regen ... (casual)
- Trotz dem Stau ... (casual)
- Während dem Essen ... (casual)
Written / Formal (always Genitiv)
- Wegen des Regens ...
- Trotz des Staus ...
- Während des Essens ...
B2 Exam Rule: In every Goethe B2 written exam, USE Genitiv with these prepositions. The Dativ version, even if spoken, costs you points in writing.
Genitiv Verbs (Rare but Important)
A few verbs take a Genitiv object — mostly in formal/legal language:
- sich erinnern an — to remember (modern uses an + Akkusativ)
- bedürfen — to need (formal): Es bedarf einer Erklärung.
- gedenken — to commemorate: Wir gedenken der Opfer.
- sich erfreuen — to enjoy: Er erfreut sich großer Beliebtheit.
Genitiv Adjective Endings
In Genitiv, adjectives almost always end in -en:
- m: des guten Mannes / eines guten Mannes
- f: der guten Frau / einer guten Frau
- n: des guten Kindes / eines guten Kindes
- pl: der guten Kinder / meiner guten Kinder
Pattern: in Genitiv, the adjective is always -en after a definite, indefinite, or possessive article.
Common Phrases with Genitiv
- im Laufe des Tages — over the course of the day
- am Ende der Woche — at the end of the week
- der Anfang des Jahres — the beginning of the year
- die Mitte des Monats — the middle of the month
- der Tod seines Vaters — his father's death
- die Hauptstadt Deutschlands — the capital of Germany
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake 1: Forgetting the masculine/neuter -s/-es ending
❌ Das Auto des Mann.
✅ Das Auto des Mannes.
Mistake 2: Adding -s to feminine nouns
❌ Das Buch der Fraus.
✅ Das Buch der Frau.
Mistake 3: Using Dativ in formal writing
❌ Wegen dem Regen ... (in B2 essay)
✅ Wegen des Regens ...
Mistake 4: Wrong adjective ending
❌ Das Auto eines guter Freundes.
✅ Das Auto eines guten Freundes.
Mistake 5: Confusing word order
The Genitiv noun comes AFTER the noun it modifies:
- ❌ Des Mannes Auto (sounds archaic / poetic)
- ✅ Das Auto des Mannes
Practice — Convert from "von + Dativ" to Genitiv

- Die Farbe von der Wand → Die Farbe der Wand.
- Die Idee von einem Freund → Die Idee eines Freundes.
