How to Plan a Topic / Presentation in German at B2: Structure, Transitions & Goethe Vortrag Strategy

At B2, you must do more than speak — you must plan and present. The Goethe B2 oral exam includes a 4-minute Vortrag (presentation) on a given topic. University admissions, internships, and professional German all require structured presentations. This guide gives you a complete planning method, transition phrases, and exam-tested strategies.

The 4-Step Planning Method

Use this method for every B2 presentation. It takes 5 minutes and saves you from rambling.

1. Define your stance in one sentence.
2. Brainstorm 4–5 ideas (pros and cons).
3. Pick 3 best ideas and order them logically.
4. Plan introduction and conclusion separately.

The Standard B2 Vortrag Structure

1. Introduction (Einleitung) — 30 seconds
2. Main body (Hauptteil) — 2.5 minutes
3. Conclusion (Schluss) — 30 seconds
4. Personal opinion (Stellungnahme) — 30 seconds

Step 1: Introduction

Three things to do in the first 30 seconds:

1. Greet briefly and name the topic.
2. Introduce why the topic is important.
3. State what you will cover.

B2 expects pros AND cons. A one-sided Vortrag loses points.

Mistake 4: No personal opinion

The Stellungnahme is mandatory. Always end with your own view, supported by one reason.
